Coinage in the Ancient Greek World – International and Common Coins
The use of coins spread in the then known world via the Greek colonies in
Magna Grecia and the Euxine Pontus. The tetradrachm of the Athenian
Democracy as well as the silver tetradrachm and the gold stater of
Alexander the Great were the international coins during the Classical
and Hellenistic periods due to their wide distribution. Common
coinages issued by various political, military and religious alliances
in the Greek world were of limited circulation.
